Peer Review Process

A couple of years back, I made some slides about the peer-review publication process. Since then, I graduated with my PhD, got out a couple of publications (which was a learning experience both in reflecting on what that meant as well as well as learning about all the different avenues to share it after it's out), and transitioned into faculty life. As a result, I decided to update these slides (and also make them prettier, ha!).
For a bit more context, in case you're curious, I modified these slides from one of the doctoral proseminar classes I teach, so you'll find a combination of terminology as well as explanations regarding processes, and some reflective questions to consider. For better readability, I'd use the three dots at the bottom and use the "full screen" mode.

And while I included the link in the slides itself, if you need a running list of journals to get started (often one of the hardest things to do if you're new to it all), here's some resources (scroll down past the conference due dates and fellowship info, to the journal section). Lastly, for some other tips and links:
  • If you're curious about the "flip side" of being a review, check out my post about my review process and reflections on being a reviewer.
  • As noted in the slides, conferences are a great way to get started, here's a running list of active conference proposals (which get updated every month), as well as some tips about proposal types, how to convert a class paper into a conference proposal, and ways to stay organized.
  • Lastly, a lot of this is tied to writing, so here's some tips like getting the first draft down and my series on writing groups.

Writing is a craft. To sharpen mine, I read a fair amount of books, articles, excerpts, and more. At least for the books, here are some I've enjoyed.

And if you're looking to buy a book, support local bookstores, and/or buy via Bookshop.
