Writing Reviews & Giving Feedback

3/23/2020

Earlier today, a friend asked about how I wrote reviews (i.e. academic feedback for manuscripts). In our text exchanges (because we are still practicing social distancing #Covid19), I realized this might have been the first time I verbalized and realized that I even had a process. So, I wanted to share how I think through my feedback and how I write reviews.

With COVID19, I am struggling with staying motivated. As a way to have some semblance of "normalcy" and missing the cafes I use to frequent, I started hosting virtual cafes on the weekly with folx who are writing, working on projects, etc.

Here are some of the things I have learned, the format, structure, and tips should you want to create your own~

Academic Websites: The Research Section

3/13/2020

This is more of a reflection versus standard post on"tips." But, in thinking through our work, I decided to situate my post in this page, because I think this reflection is necessary. I have a new tab that includes my research— it's been a category I had been avoiding because I wasn't sure what ought to be included. But after looking at several examples, (shout out to Dr. Adrienne Keene's website), I felt more comfortable with how to talk about my work.

Journaling: A Practice & DESIGN

My title page from my bullet journal
I am an avid journaler. I started when I was in high school (typical angsty teen) and have continued into my adulthood (with less angst). Despite the occasional lapse, break, and silence, I am grateful for this practice. When people talk about writing in their journals, a lot of us, myself included, might think of the near-daily practice of writing thoughts or a summary of the day. But I think there are other ways to think through journaling that are wonderful exercises in reflection that I put together here:

Creating an Academic Website (& this Website's Progression)

I might not be the best person for this, as I'm still figuring it out. But, in the spirit of moving forward in the ambiguity and learning process, here is what I've learned/been learning in constructing this website.

The main thing for me has been the question of: but what is the point? What is the point of an (academic) website?

Slides & Presentations

I’m a huge believer of making presentation slides look nice. Well-designed, intentionally crafted slides, that are visually appealing, aid in learning and absorbing materials. I know all of us have been audience members with slides that were read word for word and/or had too many words to begin with. The experience(s) are not only boring, frustrating and lost potential for engagement. So with that in mind, here are some key tips:

That First Draft

Writing is hard. The many people I've spoken with/complained to] have all said the same thing: write a first draft. Their advice is apt and true: after all, writing is easier when you are working with something compared to writing from scratch. But what happens when you can't get to the first draft? Here are some collective tips I've learned over the years to get you to that first draft:

Writing Letters of Rec

I'm more at the stage of asking for letters of recommendation, as opposed to writing them. But I do remember writing some in the past and wish I had the foresight to think about the ways language and positioning adds to gender bias. Made by University of Arizona's Commission on the Status of Women, this resource is based on research from Trix Frances and Carolyn Psenka. Check it out!

Starting A bullet Journal

One of my weekly spreads
Yesterday at a cafe, I had a random conversation that started with my bullet journal. When I write, I have my notebook out so I can bubble in my tomatoes as I go along. The person sitting next to me saw it and asked to take a look. We wound up talking about how I got started, and the conversation reminded me of how overwhelmed I was when I first started this process.

Staying organized for Conference Proposals

I've written a couple of posts now about conference proposals (e.g.  types of conference proposals, and the difference between a class paper and a proposal). With conference proposal applications deadlines floating around the corner: (check out the DUE DATES page), I wanted to share some templates I use to help keep myself organized for conferences and applications.

WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL THE ARTICLES I FIND? (AND STORAGE...)

6/10/2019

This is THE question I constantly grapple with. I, like many of my colleagues, have so many folders called something along the lines of "NEED TO READ," and still do.

But to help redo the wealth of articles I keep coming across, this is the new process I'm trying out:

Sharing your publication

I thought that once an article becomes published, then you're good to go. But what I have now realized (thanks to some great folks in my life who consistently remind me to do stuff), is what you do with the article— specifically that you need to share it.

With social media, you have the usual suspects of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and so forth where you can share within your existing networks. In addition, some other places and spaces to house academic work include Academia.edu, and BePress. The nice things about these sites is that you can upload a PDF of your work, in case the journal is on its last issue or will no longer be in circulation. If you know of others, feel free to comment below!

Well, to be frank, I spent about 2 hours writing this post that got lost by an accidental mouse swipe.

But in reflection (after the annoyance had passed/is still passing), it was super wordy, so here is hopefully a more concise version:

Being a Reviewer

So I reviewed for the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) this past year, and if you have never reviewed, I would definitely recommend it as both a way to give back and be on the other side of how your work is critiqued (which definitely helped me in writing my proposals now). Here are some tips I've learned:

Writing Habits

7/12/2018

Self reflective questions to ask yourself because writing means knowing yourself and your habits...
  • What time of day do you work best? (The evening? Morning? After 2AM?)
  • Where are you most productive? What are the environmental conditions needed for you to be most productive?
  • What are you writing goals? (Are they based on finishing an outlined section, meeting a page limits, hitting a word count, etc.?)
When answering these questions, try to think of it outside and away from the times you operated under a deadline. Adrenaline is powerful so people who are usually larks (or early morning workers) can become owls (i.e. late night workers) when a due date is just around the corner~~

As conference proposal season is underway (though, when is it not?), here are some tips about types and styles about papers and whatnot. In reading through, what to remember is: the proposal type is based on the type of engagement and feedback you'd like. And if you want some potential conferences, check out the DUE DATES page!

PhD Application Process

A while back, I had been asked to make a presentation on how to apply to PhD programs—101s about the process, the timeline, etc. I recently found it again and figure I would post.

One thing I would say that I would
stress more, now having been in a PhD program for 2 years, is the importance of researching your schools of interest in depth.

Differentiating between (Class) Papers & Conference Proposals

I have finished my coursework, so thankfully, I will not be writing (another) class paper any time soon. However, one thing I realized over the course of this year is that class papers and conference proposals differ quite a bit.

Here are some lessons learned in how I've translated my class papers to conference papers~

Applying for a PhD: WHY

I often joke the PhD application process is easily in my top 5 of most trying times, which also includes a time I had bed bugs for a year.

But all jokes aside, my PhD application process was filled with a lot of doubt, questions, and concerns. It’s a big decision to make and after making it, can be hard to navigate through the applications.

Mentorship

A couple of weeks ago, I had a great conversation with a friend on the way to the airport. We talked about a slew of things and towards the end, we ended up talking about mentor— specifically on going about identifying and building a mentoring relationship that got me thinking. In a lot of ways, mentorship can be constructed in similar ways to networking (which I wrote about here) and being horizontal or vertical, organic or structured, etc.

NETWORKING, the VERB:

I... am not the biggest fan of networking, so this is me trying to love it by learning more of it. What is networking? I like this question because I think it encourages the same dilemma that “mentoring” also has— a lot of different definitions that will completely depend on the person who’s defining it. Here are some ways I’ve tried to parse it down

RESUME

Remember that a resume is to answer the question of what: what were your responsibilities? What did you accomplish? What was your impact? (Cover letters answer why and interviews answer how.) So with that in mind, remember that the final draft of your resume is more of a snapshot versus an autobiography.
