OUTSOURCED

A Curation of where I learn much of what I learn:
resources, tips, advice, etc.
These are some of my bookmarks of sites doing the labor to share resources, provide advice, and discuss the academy.  I might not agree with every post, but still want to include them and honor the generosity, wisdom, and insight of these authors, creators, and organizations. For each of these sites, I put them in no particular order, but did try to group them for organization. For tips I write or compile with a bit more commentary, check out "me-sourced"~

Writing

For me, I struggle with writing. Every step, from ideation to being satisfied with a "final" draft, is littered with half-formed drafts, terrible sentences, lots of bubble clouds, and much more. Granted, some of these stages are part of the process, but here are some resources that have helped me, especially in some of the key aspects/products of the academic journey (like the dissertation, manuscripts, etc.)
  • Academic Phrase Bank
the socialization of academic speak can be tricky;  here's examples, wording, phrases, etc.

  • Navigating the Dissertation (U. of Southern California)
which helps breakdown a lot of the different components that make up a dissertation

  • Purdue Owl (Purdue Univeristy Online Writing Lab)
for help with citations (including APA, MLA)— especially with new revisions and editions
  • Radical Copy Editor
how language is political; check out the post on why Black is spelt with a capital B

  • The Educational Linguist (Nelson Flores)
ways to rethink language and linguistics in speaking, writing, thinking, and more

  • Ableism/Language (Lydia X. Z. Brown)
considering the role of language in reflecting and maintaining ableism

Support in(tO) the academy

The academy (whether as a graduate student, faculty, doctoral candidate, postdoc, lecturer, etc.) is hard to navigate so here are some places that have given me guidance. Within here, are people who share their journeys, whose words I love to read.

pro tip: check if your institution already has a membership

  • The Scholar Mentor (Dr. Felicia Moore Mensah)
supporting the academic journey & sign up for her monthly eNewsletter

  • You on the Market (Dr. Tara Fickle)

Reading Lists & ExplorATION

Some of my go-to websites to (1)  keep up with current events/news/trends in (higher) education; and (2) think through what books/articles I could & should need to be reading. These are based on my personal and scholarly interests, that are often evolving but generally include higher education, race, space, and methodologies. They are, of course, not the end all be all and if you have recommendations, please let me know.
