RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP
Current, Past, and Future Academic ActivitY
|
Dr. Cho's scholarly pursuits are rooted in the belief that institutional change can and are critically necessary to move us closer to a more just, equitable society. Through systems of schooling (specifically within colleges and universities), she explores the spectrum within organizational dys/function to examine those mismatches between the vision, mission, and history of colleges and universities to their politics and praxis on campus, that ultimately impact the experiences of especially the students, faculty, administrators, and staff at the margins.
These mismatches serve as the foundation for her three distinct, yet overlapping strands of research: (1) how colleges and universities respond to (campus) racism and student activism; (2) how campus cultures of retention support and push-out marginalized students, faculty, and staff; and (3) how higher education constructs and critiques academic socialization, navigation, and knowledge production. This third area is part of the driving inspiration for this website: to share resources, document her trajectory, and demystify academia. Dr. Cho's research interests and community commitments are more expansive, but this is a small snippet. |

MEDIA FEATURESRead some of my thoughts with Kate Hidalgo Bellows from The Chronicle of Higher Education regarding the ways campus activism has changed through social media. [October 11, 2021]
Appreciated the opportunity to talk with The Chronicle of Higher Education about social media, campus sexual violence, and the role of institutions in response. Read more about it here. [September 24, 2021] Read my interview Colleen Flaherty for Inside Higher Ed's article about, "Legislating Against Critical Race Theory." I also had a chance to reflect more about the interview and what we spoke about here. [June 9, 2021] Read my interview with Chris Quintana, featuring research from the American Education Research Assocation annual conference, in The Chronicle of Higher Education's article, "When Racism Roils a Campus, Colleges Respond. Will Students Be Satisfied?" [April 17. 2018] |
I had the opportunity to join Drs. W. Carson Byrd, Karly Sarita Ford, and Jameson David Lopez at the National Center for Institutional Diversity, University of Michigan for, "Data Don't Speak for Themselves" to talk about the role of numbers, critical quantitative methodologies, and how to better use our research to move towards justice.
