This is more of a reflection versus standard post on"tips." But, in thinking through our work, I decided to situate my post in this page, because I think this reflection is necessary. I have a new tab that includes my research— it's been a category I had been avoiding because I wasn't sure what ought to be included. But after looking at several examples, (shout out to Dr. Adrienne Keene's website), I felt more comfortable with how to talk about my work.
  • Research as personal: My research is deeply personal to my trajectory. As a result, I grappled with how to write about research without feeling "sterile" or feeling like it became a personal essay (after all, I have a blog for that). But in seeing examples of other folx, I realized it is a both and. I can talk about my areas of interests, the work I want to do and have done, while still honoring how I approach this work. Actually, I might argue that this positioning and framing has to exist for the research to make sense...

  • Research as ongoing: As soon-to-be faculty, I have been grappling with how much I put out into the interwebs. I have so many ideas, but I imagine that many of them will never come to fruition, for the same reasons why my ever-growing articles in my "Need to Read" folder will never be empty. I have observed a huge range of what folx share, but have personally settled with sharing the 1 or 2 projects most closely on my mind.

  • Research as inter, intra, and praxis: One of my concerns, in thinking about the evolution of this site, is where will future pages go. For example, will I have a separate page for teaching? Does that make it seem as though research and teaching are separate? Should they be combined for a long scroll? Where will I place service given that so much of the service I (already) do is driven by my research? As a tentative answer, I will make pages as I go. When I cross the bridge for "teaching," I will likely have another post then so stay tuned (and be ready for potential overhaul on this site).

Besides these these reflections, here are some things I have also seen in the "Research" section of people's websites:
  • Publications (of course), and people also include pending publications as well as ones slated for manuscript submission
  • Select conferences and presentations— the key word being select, but I'd be curious how people par down and decide which ones to include/exclude
  • Media coverage and public scholarship / mainstream outlets
  • Background like education and honors/awards
  • Funding and grants for what monies are supporting the research
  • Reading lists and literature to learn more about a topic

Again, referring to my previous website-evolution post, I don't think there is a right or wrong way to go about presenting your research. But I did want to highlight some of my thought process in case others are going through similar stages~

Writing is a craft. To sharpen mine, I read a fair amount of books, articles, excerpts, and more. At least for the books, here are some I've enjoyed.

And if you're looking to buy a book, support local bookstores, and/or buy via Bookshop.
