Random Round up: Reading...

After a couple of weeks of travel, I've had the opportunity to catch up on bookmarked readings and explore all the links friends have sent me. Several friends of mine, all unrelated to one another, have discussed how nice it would be to share the recent stories, articles, books we've all been enjoying. With that in mind, I wanted to share two authors whose articles I've been reading. Both authors are Women of Color (a new intention I'm trying to have for my reading lists) and both recommendations came from dear friends of mine. 

Jia Tolentino

How I came to: After spending the day rearranging books in the living room (my hobby), my friend Erica and I were talking about well-written articles we've enjoyed reading. While sipping wine, I shared my current love of Vox's Aja Romano, and Erica introduced me to Jia Tolentino. 

Why: My relationship with religion is complicated. Do I still profess to be a Christian? Yes. Do I know that this means being accountable to the ways my religion has become an incredibly oppressive force that feels so far away from the tenets I hold true? Yes. The first Tolentino article I read was "Losing religion and finding ecstasy in Houston" and as I read through it, I felt a mirror for the words I hadn't been able to form. Naturally, I started reading through her other works and quickly fell in love.

SOLEIL Ho

How I came to: The email exchange history between Dr. Krystle Cobian and I mostly consist of links of articles, applications, and words of encouragement (get yourself friends like these), and she's the one who introduced me to Soleil Ho.

​Why: I love food. I love eating food, thinking about food, making food tours, listening about food, and love it even more when I come across sharp, witty, critical thoughts about the intersections of food with race, culture, class, and more. That pretty much sums up why I love Soleil Ho.
